Ku-ring-gai’s New Indoor Sports Hub Opens February
Ku-ring-gai Council worked with the NSW Government and Schools Infrastructure NSW to build the new indoor sports centre at St Ives High School. Mayor Christine Kay said the cooperation between the Council and Schools Infrastructure NSW had created an exciting new hub for indoor sports.
“Ku-ring-gai Council is delighted that this partnership approach has resulted in a brand-new facility open to everyone in our community,” Mayor Kay said. “The sports centre has four indoor sports courts, a multipurpose room for meetings and other activities, amenities and a café.
“With a growing population and increased demands for more recreational space, Council continues to invest a significant amount in upgrading and building sporting facilities in Ku-ring-gai, particularly multipurpose spaces.”
In early 2021, the NSW Department of Education delivered the first stage of the new indoor sports centre, including 2 multi-use courts, school canteen, 2 modern classrooms, a fitness lab and a seminar room.
Ku-ring-gai Council led the second stage of the sports centre, which was funded by Council together with a $3.5 million NSW Government grant and a NSW Treasury funded low interest loan.
The result of both stages is an integrated complex with features including:
- A two-storey sports complex including two additional sports courts, a multi-purpose room, amenities and a café
- Underground basement car parking with stairs and lift access
- Landscaping works, accessible pedestrian entry and new vehicle access from Horace Street.
The Council has appointed Belgravia Leisure to operate the facility for the community when it is available outside of school hours. With more than 30 years of experience in the leisure and recreation industry, Belgravia Leisure currently manages 260+ sport, leisure and tourism sites across Australia and New Zealand.
Belgravia Leisure CEO Nick Cox said a focus of inclusivity and fostering a sense of belonging and well-being will ensure this facility will thrive as a community hub.
“Belgravia Leisure is proud to partner with Ku-ring-gai Council to manage the day-to-day operations of this amazing facility, and we will work hard to create a welcoming atmosphere, offering centre access and programs to people of all ages and abilities.
“We look forward to working with the St Ives community to ensure we are catering to their health and wellbeing needs.”
